Soyon An
I'm really quite lucky. It's not everyday you have the opportunity to ask a few questions to some of the world's most sought-after style experts. And I've been blessed to have two on JVP Media - Mad Men's Janie Bryant and now the uber-talented Soyon An. I'm so pleased to bring this interview with Soyon An to my readers. I hope you enjoy!

JVP: Ok, because I'm a gigantic Jennifer Lopez fan, how many outfit changes does she go through before a taping?

SA: Not sure. I don't dress her. But she comes out looking fabulous every night.

JVP: Each new season brings about new fashion! Tell us about the biggest trends you’re seeing this season?

SA: Definitely the short in the front, long in the back dresses and skirts. Sheer tops, dresses, and skirts. Bohemian styles like caftans, beads, crochet, linens, HOT HOT bright fun colors.

JVP: How important is it for each contestant to have their own unique style? How does it evolve throughout the season?

SA: Absolutely important. It defines who they are as an artists and their fans to follow in their footsteps. Every season without a doubt there is a fashion evolution whether the contestants come in thinking they can fight it or not. Being an artist is being the full package.

JVP: Any particular past contestant that you really loved working with that impressed you with their fashion sense?

SA: I really love working with Pia Toscano, she has impeccable style. Adam Lambert was fun to dress on tour. Naima and I had a lot of fun!

JVP:  Why is being the stylist of American Idol a dream job?

SA: You get to build an artist from the ground up. And you met some truly talented people! Also there's so many people who follow the show and follow the fashion. You get to really showcase your work.

You do NOT want to miss this. The infamous Half-Black Brother with a Korean Mother, entertainment celebrity correspondent, Chelsea Lately actor, Y100 DJ and now stand up comedian Michael Yo (wait, I need a quick breath) is coming to Seattle (Bellevue actually) for a show at the Parlor Live Comedy Club on April 19th. I can PERSONALLY vouch for Michael - afterall, he was my boss at Y100 when I interned over a summer for him 8 years ago. When I heard Yo was coming to the Pac Northwest, I wanted the low down on the excitement that has been his life in entertainment and his new show on Yahoo, The Yo Show.

JVP: Radio, Television and now Stand Up? Is there anything Michael Yo hasn't tapped into yet? No, really - it seems like you are everywhere these days - crossing over different mediums, what's next, movies?

YO: love everything I do! They all fit together like a puzzle, so it's never too overwhelming. It just sounds like a lot. I would love getting into acting or more comedy improve, but right now my focus is on my own show on Yahoo, The Yo Show . We highlight everything in pop culture and get great celebrity interviews! I would have to say interviewing people is my favorite thing to do.

JVP: Tell us about your Comedy Tour.....has this been something you've wanted to do since you got your start in radio or was it a culmination of different experiences over the years?

YO: I can honestly tell you I never thought about doing stand up ...EVER, but Jo Koy and Josh Wolf, who are regulars on Chelsea Lately’s roundtable always told me I should try it. One day on the show Chelsea challenged me to get on stage, and I ended up doing stand up at Miami Improv. After that I was hooked.  I thought of the idea for the Hot Mess Comedy Tour because in LA there are so many hilarious comedians that should be getting way more attention. I wanted to put together a bunch of comedians I love and take them to different markets… like to the Parlor on April 19th! Everyone should come check it out, it's some of the best comedians from all over the country mixed up in one show! And no, I'm not ashamed of that plug. ;)

JVP: I'm right there with ya! It's got to be a riot being on Chelsea Lately? What's the atmosphere like before, during and after being on set?

YO: Chelsea keeps a very laid back and fun atmosphere before the show. She comes back and says hi and is very friendly to everyone except me. It think she tries to intimidate me before the show, and it works! Then once we hit the stage it's every man for himself. I love that show, it's the American Idol of comedy. If you're lucky enough to be on her show, you have a great shot at making it in comedy. She knows exactly what her audience likes and doesn't like. That’s what makes her brilliant!

Picture

JVP: You still have a gigantic fan following in Miami at Y100. Will you always consider yourself a Miami boy or has Yo officially become Mr. Hollywood?

YO: “305 till I die” like PitBull says! Miami has embraced me like no other city. It's good to go back and see the love the audience gives me, and I try to give as much back as I can. I just hit my 10 year anniversary on the air at Y100 and Ricky Martin did my party...that was one of the best experiences of my life!

JVP: What are you looking forward to most about visiting Seattle and performing at the Parlor Live?

YO: I've never been to Seattle and have heard so many great things! I heard the crowds there really love standup, and I'll be bringing two great comedians with me, Sarah Tiana and Owen Benjamin. And of course I’m looking forward to hanging out with you Jessica :)

Picture

JVP: Aww...well you've got to have a sense of humor with our dreary weather! You've got quite a twitter and facebook following. How has social media changed your career and helped you transition into so many different mediums?

YO: I love social media! It's crazy that people even care what I do. My followers have been great! They have been showing up at my Hot Mess shows and of course helping me out with my celeb interviews. I always love to get in a couple of questions from my Twitter and Facebook fans.

JVP: Complete this sentence. In the next five years I see myself.....

YO: Having my own late night talk show "Yo Show," finally being married with kids and growing as a stand up comedian. That would make me happy and complete.

JVP: And here's my self plug. And my favorite former intern is _____.

YO: Awesome and I'm so proud of ya!
